ABOUT SLIEMA

The Maltese hub for shopping, cafes and restaurants

Sliema is one of the more prominent coastal towns on the island, being a central hub for all your vacation needs. It is well known for its lovely beaches, packed cafes and restaurants and also provides enough options for entertainment and shopping. Sliema gives its visitors a perfect balance between quiet narrow streets and the busy fast paced life of the promenade, allowing you to experience all facets of the Maltese culture. Being a coastal town, the summers are the busiest times where you'll find people walking or jogging up and down the promenade whilst others socialise over a cup of coffee or glass of wine at the various restaurants and "gabbanas" you'll find across the promenade.

Sliema started gaining popularity under the British Colony whose influence can be seen in  the Victorian buildings along the promenade overlooking the rocky coastline and the orthodox churches scattered across the town. As a matter of fact, English is an official language in Malta together with the native Maltese language (which is a mix of Anglosaxon, arabic and Italian),  Sliema underwent the transformation from the quiet fisherman’s village to the hotspot for wealthy British and Maltese families, and undoubtedly it was considered as the most important location for the British.

The Sliema promenade, gives way to three other coastal towns which are Gzira, Ta Xbiex and Msida marina, all of which offer more options for dining out and entertainment. Additionally, the views from these 3 towns are astounding with perfect visuals of the island's capital Valletta. In the other direction of the Sliema promenade one will also find St Julian's which offers more nightlife and beaches.
